Dialogues and Perspectives, From Context to Exhibition

From Context to Exhibition is a contemporary look at how artists begin to translate collaborative processes and practice into the context of the white space. The work presented forms part of The Learning Development Programme, an experiential learning programme for student artists in fine art courses who want to engage in collaborative arts practice with communities of place and/or interest. Each year the student artists work with different communities around Dublin to co create artwork.

The Learning Programme has been running since 2001 and this year the exhibition will highlight not only the work of current students but also the influences of past alumni of the Programme, a number of whom have contributed to the Programme’s training strand. Placing the students work in the broader context of trends in collaborative arts practices, the exhibition unpicks the tricky questions of authorship, collaboration and different frameworks of non-object based practices.

This year the students worked with very diverse groups including the Trinity College Debating Society, Liberties/Dublin 8 traders; a cross-generational group and online communities.

Dialogue and Perspectives is a one day event. It is an active research day tracing the journey and processes of collaboration through creative practice, an attempt to articulate the avenues of exploration and the journeys towards artistic outcomes, and an opportunity to retrace the steps towards a collaborative process in a socially engaged context.

With keynote speaker Sean Taylor and panellists Liz Burns, Grace Dyas and Philip Napier, anticipate a day of collective investigation.

Dialogue and Perspectives afternoon session will highlight the role of mentoring for artists working collaboratively with communities across and between art forms. Mentoring panel includes: artists Louise Lowe; Shane O’Reilly, TheatreCLUB; Amanda Coogan, performance artist; and writers Lia Mills and Melatu Okorie.

The case studies presented form part of both the Artist in the Community Scheme Research and Development with Mentoring Award and the Arts Council Artist in the Community Scheme Bursary Award: Cultural Diversity and the Connect Mentoring Programme, a partnership from Create and Common Ground, is an Arts Council funded initiative on mentoring and collaborative arts.
