A 3-day Ceramic workshop with Artist Kevin Callaghan (MA) RCA

Cost : €185 / €160 Members/studentsWORKSHOP OVERVIEWIn this 3-day workshop participants will investigate ceramic hand-building techniques and learn to construct architectural ceramic forms/artworks with clay. The main focus of this workshop will be learning to work with clay to build up a geometric and linear language through ceramic investigations. Participants with have the opportunity to experiment hands on with different types of clays, coloured slips and surface textures, while also learning ways to build objects with a range of surface qualities and problem solve various constructive forms. This workshop is open to all, across all disciplines, students professionals and non-professionals but some creative experience is preferable.
DETAILS
– Experience in ceramics is not necessary.
– Participants will learn to explore the material of clay through hand-building, and learn high-quality techniques and finishes producing highly professional outcomes.
– Participants will learn to build up a visual language around creating architectural forms through clay and ceramics while achieving dynamic and fulfilling results.
The workshop will be held in the National Sculpture Factory on 28th , 29th , 30th July 2017.
All ceramic artworks produced, while on the workshop will have to be left to dry and then be kiln fired at the NSF after these 3-day course and will be set for collection 2-weeks after the last day of the workshop. Please note the National Sculpture Factory is not responsible for the delivery of the artworks once fired.
WORKSHOP REQUIREMENTS
Participants are encouraged to bring their own tools and materials to experiment with but all participants are asked to bring the following:
1. Basic tool kit
towels + apron / brushes / materials to create textures / ceramic slips + stains / ceramic tools / rolling pin. (if possible). Basic hand tools maybe of use but are not a necessary requirement.
2. H&S & Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Suitable work clothes, aprons etc. Participants are asked to bring their own suitable respirators or similar if they are
allergic or sensitive to fine dust. Dust masks and latex gloves will be supplied.
3. Sample Materials & Sketchbook
Participants are asked to bring a sketchbook, drawing materials, and any material, surface or source that can create texture and that they feel may be relevant to explore via the architectural ceramic workshop. e.g materials with
interesting textures or compositions, resistant and non-resistant fibers/ cardboard/cardboard tubes etc…
WORKSHOP SCHEDULE
10 – 5pm (1 hour lunch)
Day 1
Introduction
10:00 – 10.30: Tea & coffee. Introductory talk by Tutor’s on what to expect from the workshop.
10.30 – 11.30: Workshop Leader Kevin Callaghan with give a slide show of his work and introduce a series of examples of other artists’ work, illustrating a variety of approaches to ceramic construction relevant to the workshop.
11.30 – 12.30: Demonstration by tutor on different hand building techniques.
13.00 – 14.00: Lunch
14.00 – 17.00: Experimentation stage – students will begin to experiment and develop their own techniques with the support of the workshop tutors.
Day 2
Experimentation/Extrapolation
10.00 – 11.00 : Tea & coffee. Andrew Whitelaw will present a slide show of his work and range of his practice.
11.00 – 12.00 : Demonstration by tutors on techniques to experiment with colour and textures
13.00 – 14.00 : Lunch
14.00 – 17.00 : – Use the experiments to create new and exciting shapes and furthering the new learnt expertises.
– Architectural ceramic hand-building/ pushing the boundaries.
– Adding color and texture
Day 3
Extrapolation/Evaluation
10.00 – 10:30 : Tea & coffee. Brief assessment of what stage people are at & what has left to be achieved by end of the day.
10:30 – 13:00 : Final development of shapes & finishing off of all ceramic works.
13.00 – 14.00 : Lunch
15.00 – 16.00 : Conclusion of all new work & peer review.
16.00 – 17.00 : Display of works with group peer review.
Kevin Callaghan is currently residing in Cork. He completed his MA at the Royal College of Art, London in 2013. His practice is multi-disciplinary with an emphasis on exploratory ceramic and sculptural art-making. Kevin has designed and facilitated a series of experimental sculpture and ceramic workshops in both Ireland and the UK. He has exhibited nationally and internationally, showing at the Dublin Castle; The London Art Fair; the Saatchi Gallery; Cynthia Corbett Gallery and the Young Maters Art Prize; the Victoria and Albert Museum “What is Luxury” with Unknown Fields Division and Toby Smith (which continues to receive critical reviews worldwide with articles in the Guardian and the New York Times). He is working towards a solo show at the Doswell gallery for September 2017. He currently has a studio at the NSF.
Andrew Whitelaw graduated from Crawford College of Art and Design in 2015. His practice as a ceramicist centres on the making of a diverse range of contemporary objects – from the functional to the sculptural.
