A site specific installation by artist Liam O’Callaghan will show in the RHA Atrium this spring.

A pile of wood sits in the corner of a studio, various bits gathered or left over and kept for further use if necessary. While it rests there, marked by its previous use, it emanates a multitude of possibilities for its next use. Each of these opportunities bring countless decisions. This mass of possibilities surrounds us each day and emerges from the objects and situations in our environment and emotional landscape.

Applying a simple set of limitations, (the wood, the light, a camera), bits of wood from the pile now become their own event, a new event. They reform and navigate a new space with their own rhythm. Shadow’s give form and presence, are shaped by their surroundings and grounded to a place. Image’s are made that in their own small way grapple with the tug of chaos and order and engage in the continuum of possibilities.

Liam O’Callaghan’s work utilities sculpture, photography, installations, sound and video. He has exhibited widely in Ireland and internationally. His exhibition ‘Bit Symphony’ at Temple Bar Gallery & Ormston House, was enthusiastically received by both peers and critics, as was his participation in Dublin Contemporary in both Earlsford Terrace and The National Gallery of Ireland. His solo exhibition “if and then” traveled to the Butler Gallery, Kilkenny, Galway Arts Centre (as part of the Galway International Arts Festival) and Rasche Ripken Gallery Berlin. Other group shows include ‘Twenty’ a 20 year celebration of IMMA and Redemption Jokes, NGBK, Berlin. His work is included in a number of public collections such as the Irish Museum of Modern, Arts Council of Ireland, Office of Public Works and private collections both national and international. Residencies include the Schwerin Kunstverein, Germany and the Artists’ Residency Programme at the Irish Museum of Modern Art. He is currently working on a large-scale public sculpture commissioned by South Dublin County Council. He is based in Dublin.
